This is an excellent addition to WWII RAAF history. It is so important that these stories are written down for future generations. As a biographer myself, I fully appreciate the research that has gone into this book. Many of us knew of John Lerew's "We who are about to die" statement from Rabaul, but few Australians knew the full story. Now it has been told in a very readable form. John Lerew displayed leadership and initiative in a difficult situation. His bravery was not just in the air, but was also on the ground, where tough decisions had to be made. Lerew took command, accepted responsibility in the field, and saved many lives. For this he is to be greatly admired. This book is a must read.
