The Battle of Bismarck Sea is given insufficient emphasis in the literature that underpins our understanding of events in New Guinea in 1942 and 1943.
This book fills that gap. The story is told at big picture level and from the perspectives of the participants, Australian, American, and Japanese. Understanding the battle, particularly the events of March 3, is complemented by personal narratives. The balance is very effective.
There is comprehensive attention to detail which allows the reader to cross reference information, particularly from the story itself to the appendices.
The book leaves the reader with a greater understanding of the battle itself, and its significance to the Japanese, the Americans, and to Australia.
It also demonstrates with absolute clarity the accelerating influence of allied air power in the south west Pacific by 1943. In doing so, it generates a fascinating picture of the Fifth Air Force and its commander George Kenney. That the book is a great read is an additional bonus.
