Every now and again a "must have" military history appears on the market.
Such a book is Lex McAulay's second edition "Battle of the Bismarck Sea."
This book could overwhelm the reader with the volume and detail of information were it not for the manner in which it is written. There are moments in the book where the reader becomes so involved in the story that it's easy to forget the mass of information collected to produce the work.
Woven throughout the book, and neatly formatted in Appendices, Mr. McAulay's prodigious research spans museums, libraries, personal collections, interviews and material provided by people from all over the world.
The Battle of the Bismarck Sea, which occurred in 1943, seems to be sadly overlooked in aviation history. Mr. McAulay rectifies this deficiency. His book combines talent and hard work to produce a significant and important contribution to aviation history.
Whether about Allied or Japanese forces, the story is told with clarity and understanding. This is simply a "must have" book for anyone interested in aviation history, but especially for those whose lives were affected by that battle.
